Kit #44 USS CHENANGO a SANGAMON Class CVE
Converted from T-3 type tankers, the 4 Sangamon class CVE’s were considered a great improvement over the smaller Bouge Class of converted C-3 cargo ships.
Only 4 ships were converted, the need for tankers being too great to spare any more hulls. These were Sangamon, Suwannee, Santee, and Chenango. Chenango was fitted with a different AA armament outfit than the other 3 sisters, being armed with four quad 1.1” mounts & twenty two 20MM cannon instead of the four twin 40MM mounts and fifteen 20MM cannon the other 3 ships received.
They began their war service as part of Operation Torch in 1942, and served until the end of the Pacific War.
This kit is of CHENANGO in her 1942 Operation Torch configuration, armed as mentioned above with the quad 1.1” mounts and twenty two 20MM cannon.
